Blood Moon
On Tuesday March 3, 2026 SoCal was in the peek viewing area for the most recent Blood Moon at 3am. I have always been fascinated with the moon but Blood Moons especially. My first attempt at shooting a blood moon was back in October of 2014. I tried again in May 2021 and November of 2022. Sadly the November Blood Moon was far too overcast to shoot. I am constantly working on improving my lunar photography skills and gear all the time.
The morning proved difficult with a thick marine layer rolling in. I drove for about an hour to find a place that would be dark enough to shoot inside the city. My original plan was to go to the beach/pier like I did in 2021.
Ultimately I found a small industrial strip mall in the La Mirada area. In 2021 I was shooting with a 50-140mm telephoto lens coupled with an extender. This time I upgraded to a 70-300mm lens. Now I am working on finding a good telescope setup that I can travel with. My big telescope isn't easy to setup and move when the weather doesn't cooperate. Hopefully the next Blood Moon in 2028 will provide some good weather and I will have a lot of practice on a new setup by then.
